Ed Miliband appoints Michael as Shadow Secretary of State for Transport

As reported by the Daily Mirror and BBC, Ed Miliband has appointed Michael as Shadow Secretary of State for Transport. The move sees Michael move from the Cabinet Office to Transport, with Mary Creagh moving to fill the role left vacant by Jim Murphy, and Lucy Powell taking over as Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office.

Commenting on his appointment, Michael said:

"As the proud son of a railwayman, I'm delighted to have been appointed as Shadow Secretary of State for Transport."

"At the next general election, people will face a big choice on public transport. While the Tories are driving up costs, wasting taxpayers’ money and cutting services, Labour will put passengers at the heart of our transport network.

“It is clear to me that local bodies know best the needs of passengers and commuters who use the services.  That’s why we will devolve decisions over the running of local and regional services so that areas can bring together trains, buses and trams into a single network.”
