Michael warns people to take care over charity collections this Christmas

As reported in the Barnsley News and Sport, Michael has warned people in Barnsley who give unwanted goods on their doorstep to charitable causes this Christmas, to take care in ensuring that the goods reach genuine charity beneficiaries.

The Fundraising Standards Board (FRSB) estimates that bogus charity bag collections hitting residents’ doorsteps are costing UK charities an estimated £15 million a year.

Commenting, Michael Dugher said:

“It is fantastic that people are so generous and donate to charities, especially at Christmas. But the number of bogus operators colleting goods and giving false impressions that they are being sold for charitable causes is concerning. Not only is it a crime, but charities are losing out on millions of lost income.
“Charity collections of household goods are an important way of generating vital funding for good causes, but we need to make sure that people in Barnsley can give with confidence. When donating, I encourage people to be cautious and look for the FRSB ‘give with confidence’ tick and to check the FRSB advice on their website - www.givewithconfidence.org.uk.”
