Michael calls on ministers to act to tackle long-term youth unemployment

As reported in the Barnsley Chornicle, South Yorkhsire Times andBarnsley News and Sport, Michael has called on ministers to take action to tackle long-term unemployment in Barnsley East and long-term youth unemployment in Barnsley Local Authority – both of which remain at unacceptably high levels.

Since the election in May 2010, long-term youth unemployment in Barnsley Local Authority has increased by a worrying 67 per cent. In Barnsley East long-term unemployment has also increased by 63 per cent since May 2010.

Commenting, Michael said:

“The decreases in the headline figures are welcome, but people are facing a cost-of-living crisis and on average working people are £1,600 worse off under this out-of-touch Government. On top of this figures show prices have now risen much faster than wages for 41 of the 42 months since David Cameron became Prime Minister.

“Since the election long-term unemployment in Barnsley East has increased by 63 percent and long-term youth unemployment in Barnsley LA is up 67 per cent in the same time period. These figures are still far too high and unacceptable.

“Ministers need to take action to tackle the high levels of youth unemployment. We need a compulsory jobs guarantee, funded by repeating the tax on bank bonuses, and limiting pension tax relief for the very highest earners. This would guarantee real paid work for young people unemployed for a year and also for all adults unemployed for two years – work they would have to take or lose their benefits.”
