Michael Calls for Legal Status for British Sign Language

This week Michael signed Early Day Motion 1060, calling on the Government to give British Sign Language (BSL) full legal status as afforded to other officially recognised languages.

BSL is used by an estimated 151,000 people in the UK, 87,000 of whom are deaf. Affording BSL legal status would protect this language, and would provide opportunities to access the language.

For instance, legal status would put BSL on the national curriculum and ensure it if offered in schools, enabling BSL users to access education in their first language.

Michael was delighted to sign this motion, and recognise the campaign for BSL’s legal status led by Labour’s Dawn Butler.
